Matahari Department Store specialises, like many others, in apparel, accessories, beauty products and homeware. But Matahari stores aim to deliver a more dynamic shopping experience. The first outlet was a children’s fashion store, which opened in 1958 in Jakarta. The first department store followed in 1972, and the company has since expanded across the archipelago to have a presence in 62 cities. It has 50,000 employees, 126 stores and more than 1,200 Indonesian suppliers. Over 90 percent of direct purchase are locally sourced.
